Of how he anticipated in Brazil a generation that would go on to buy cds and imported instruments, to be informed musically by MTV and the internet, the latter still incipient in 1997.It was in that year that the Cigarettes released their first album.Created in Rio de Janeiro in 1994 by Marcelo Colares, until today its only fixed member. It is estimated that more than 100 people have played in the band since then.

BINGO was also Number 1 in the catalog of the Brazilian independent label midsummer madness, whose list of releases today is counted in the hundreds. Mmcd01, its internal cataloging code, was largely ignored by the public and critics at first.

The Brazilian music press was, still is, refractory to bands that sang in English, or in a language close to the English language. The implication of music scribes with Anglophiles is something that has never been fully clarified, nor does it need to be, since it is ultimately irrelevant. But it’s still curious.
