The Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the best orchestras in the world – because of its noble tone it is not called “the aristocrat among orchestras” for nothing. In the 1960s, when Erich Leinsdorf was music director, the orchestra’s chamber music ensemble, the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, recorded several critically acclaimed albums for RCA, now reissued on CD for the first time. The ensemble, led by legendary violinist Joseph Silverstein, performed works as diverse as Mozart’s Flute Quartet K. 285, Beethoven’s Serenade, Elliott Carter’s Wind Quintet, Webern’s Concerto op. 24, trios by Brahms and Schubert, and Hindemith’s Little Chamber Music.For the first time ever, recordings of Spohr’s Nonet and Barber’s “Summer Music” appear on these 10 CDs. Also to be heard again is a conversation of Peter Ustinov with Erich Leinsdorf and Joseph Silverstein, as well as an original overview of the acting legend on the subject of chamber music.
