Hailed by the press as “an exceptional musician of rare versatility and with a true international vocation”, Simone Prattico, drummer and composer, announces the release of Oriundo, the follow-up to his compelling 2016 debut Brooklyn Sessions. Oriundo is the next stage, eight tracks that reflect the alchemy between the Mediterranean culture and the imprint of the Afro American music, a distinctive trait and calling card of this much sought-after drummer.

Born in Rome, based in Paris but itinerant for the past 25 years, Simone embodies the sensibility of an “oriundo”, an Italian term that means “native (of)” and refers to the descendants of immigrants, most often from the south of Italy, who have generally became strangers to their country of origin. No matter where he is operating, Prattico carries his southern Italian heritage with him.

A highly in-demand drummer, session musician and master of hybrid grooves combining a wide range of styles and rhythmic languages, he wasn’t yet 20 when he’d already toured and recorded with several Italian pop stars, as well as the jazz heavyweights of the time. More opportunities led him to work in Paris in the 90’s, from where he would later make the leap to New York.

From 2005 onward, he has traveled regularly to the U.S. where he has toured extensively, performing in major clubs and theaters (Lincoln Center, Webster Hall, Joe’s Pub, Bitter End (NYC); Troubadour (LA); The Fillmore (San Francisco), etc.), and on several TV and radio shows (Spinning on air on WNYC, Paiste Magazine, NYC; Music City Roots, Nashville; eTown, Boulder; Quick Hits, San Francisco, etc.). The last 15 years have been filled with important and solid collaborations with local musicians, and New York has become, along with Rome and Paris, another of Prattico’s homes.

Prattico’s eclectic career and prestigious collaborations of many kinds (Piers Faccini, Hindi Zahra, Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, Ibrahim Maalouf, Marcia Maria, Fredrika Stahl, Rick Margitza, Jasser Haj Youssef, Daniele Silvestri, Gianni Morandi, Max Gazze’, Mike Francis, Marina Rei, Dario Deidda, Stefano Sabatini, etc.) led him to play on the main stages of the world (Tokyo Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Philharmonie de Paris, Billboard Live Japan, Olympia etc.) proving how important it is for an artist to be not only original and well prepared, but also “authentic”.

Intense, tribal and romantic, Oriundo offers contemporary jazz, with a myriad of influences, reflecting the many musical contexts encountered on Prattico’s international path. The album builds on the classic trio model of Brooklyn Sessions where spontaneity is the key and the players capture the music in a few takes. It also deepens a musical relationship formed over the last decade with the brilliant pianist and co-composer Klaus Mueller, a dear friend and a leading figure in the New York jazz and Brazilian scene.

Along with them are two esteemed bassists – Essiet Okon Essiet, one of New York’s leading players, and the acclaimed, GRAMMY-nominated Edward Perez. Gregor Huebner (violin), Carrie Frey (viola), and Rubin Khodeli (cello), meanwhile, provide sweetness, tension and connection on two tracks. The energy and the sound that emanate from it testify to a true band spirit. A bright, spirited and melodic trio, Oriundo reflects Prattico’s itinerant musical world.
