ABUC is the 8th album by Roberto Fonseca hes released under his own name and the first to appear on the Impulse! label. Teeming with rascally rhythms and burly brass and woven from allusions, souvenirs and contrasts, ABUC is a kaleidoscope of dancing colors with which Roberto tells a story: the great and rich story of Cuban music, from yesterday to today.

After making his name in the Buena Vista Social Club, the Havana-based pianist has set about exploring the links between Cuban music and jazz.
His eighth album Abuc is his best yet; a winding tour around Cuba’s musical history, from an Afro-mambo complete with crazed cackling from rising star Dayme Arocena to a bolero featuring the honeyed vocals of Fonseca’s mother, Mercedes. But while special guests abound – New Orleans’ Trombone Shorty is there on a guaracha-soul version of Cubano Chant; ex-BVSC singer Eliades Ochoa delivers Tumbao de la Unidad as if in a time capsule – it is Fonseca who stands out. Fluid on a traditional chachacha, muscular on some hiphop-flecked electro-fusion, he’s got the whole of Cuba in his hands.
