The evangelist indulges: tenors often dare something. They are, perhaps even before the sopranos, the singers with the greatest confidence.

Peter Schreier promises many thousands of miracles in the opening title of this unusual collection. There is tense expectation. And already afterwards a small Chopin piece, with which many a middle-talented piano student enchanted the relatives, is edited and provided with the text by Ernst Marischka. In the 1930s it was a centerpiece of the musician melodrama with the sounding name “Abschiedswalzer”. And what you can do with Chopin’s etude, how you refine this kitsch with a big voice, that shows Schreier and for this it absolutely needs tenor self-confidence.

At Granada at the latest, you gently rumble along and are simply happy about this entertaining taste confusion. The Great Radio Orchestra Berlin under Robert Hanell swings the castanets and otherwise beguiles with a screen-wide sound in which you can let yourself drift. It doesn’t always have to be Bayreuth! You can also sing beautifully at the sight of the Sierra Nevada. And who else takes these high notes so wonderfully?

Schreier didn’t take this colorful bag just to say goodbye or end his career, but right in the middle of it. Two years after his hit Peter Schreier singt Weihnachtslieder, the most successful classical recording of the GDR, the singer tried again on popular material and obviously mixed his favorites from the not so serious repertoire together. Operetta, sounding arrangements of well-known melodies, opera highlights, simply put: romantic scraps of languor, which one likes to fall for in this interpretation, in order to wash out afterwards perhaps shamefully the ears with simple Baroque. But why? In addition to its undoubted entertainment value, it also has a novelty value, to hear the former boyhood from the Cross choir sing a stunning Kálmán (salute to me the sweet, the lovely women), to see him rise from lyrical singer to radiant hero in little pearls of song (springtime). It’s a bit like listening to the serious and unique Bach evangelist’s favourite secret hobby (Vaghissima Sembianza). Unlike many tenors of his era, Schreier knows exactly what his voice can and cannot do. And also when it’s time to stop; as the tenor said at the end of his career in 2005: “It’s more difficult to defend a reputation in old age, and I don’t want people to say at any point: he would have left it better.«

Everyone can decide for himself which pieces in this collection he books as small miracles, and which Schreier would have left better. But after many moments, in which the soft pulsating voice of Schreier can be heard here in completely new musical landscapes, even at the highest altitude, one can say: good, that this document from 1977 exists!
