Patty’s voice is nice, smooth and pure sounding, yet she’s still extremely expressive. She really uses a softer volume to her advantage to hit just the right notes and add just the right embellishments. The delicacy of her voice contrasting with the lush orchestration is actually really lovely which brings me to whom is responsible there. Thomas Talbert commands a full orchestra nearly with woodwinds, trumpet (Joe Wilder), guitar (Barry Galbraith) and so on. Together they provide a pretty full sound, but they seem to know when to tone it down and let Patty weave her vocal magic instead. The result is a rather sophisticated yet whimsical sounding effort and it’s actually rather unique yet likeable arrangements that result. Some of the popular standards chosen on this album are “Get Out Of Town”, and “You Don’t Know What Love Is” but actually they are arranged so differently that instead of old hat, we get something interesting. Most of these songs were new to me, and for the most part it seems that they are pretty darned good. “Crazy He Calls”, “Will You Still Be Mine”, “Alone Together” and “Summer Rain” are just a few favorites from this one. Although it’s not too far off from other cool jazz albums, it’s the little touches that makes this one special.
