In its versatility and smoothness of expression, the saxophone is closest to the human voice: this is the proof of this Album, which the NDR choir has recorded together with the Raschèr Saxophone quartet.

in addition to several A cappella pieces, nine(birds)here combines works for choir and saxophone, all of which were first published by composers Ian Wilson and Ivan Moody. Both born in 1964, they compose stylistically in very different ways. While Wilson was primarily inspired in his work by the music and art of the modern age, Moody’s works are characterized by his belonging to the Orthodox Church and his preference for religious, mystical themes.

Wilson’s composition nine(birds)here, two small pieces from 1990, are his first works for choir and the setting of two poems by the American poet E. E. Cummings. Between the two small poems, which Cummings created with more than 20 years of distance from each other, Wilson recognized an “effective connecting contrast […] with their respective focus on standstill and movement”. In nine(birds)here he translates Cumming’s imaginative text layouts and punctuated interruptions into his own musical language. Thus he takes the fragmentary character of Cumming’s poetry into his music.

The harmony of the following piece I carry your heart – the setting of E. E. Cumming’s well – known love poem I carry your heart with me-is more opulent and sophisticated. Wilson composed it in 2011 as a wedding present for the daughter of a befriended couple. If the basic mood of the work is a tender, loving one, Ian Wilson translates the emotional outbursts of love into sudden outbursts in the dynamics, Agogics and Ambitus of the melody.
