Pianist Krzysztof Moskalewicz about music, competitions, new album “Chopin ballads & Sun Postcards” and cooperation with Sun Keting. Please read the interview.

Justyna Borowiecka: I know that thanks to Chopin’s music, you fell in love with the piano and devoted your musical career to this instrument. What do you find most fascinating about Chopin’s music and piano?

Krzysztof Moskalewicz: – the most fascinating thing about the piano, compared to other instruments, is for me the possibility of obtaining a myriad of consonants of sounds, that is, an element of harmony. When listening to intervals or chords, you can get the impression that some sounds fit together more (consonant sound) and some less (dissonant sound), a little bit like between people… the relationship between sounds affects the tension and the perception of music incredibly and I think that awareness of these relationships greatly helps the performer in communicating to the audience. I think that Chopin in his modern times brought the element of harmony to the heights. Some chords are even his trademark-the so-called Chopin chord. I think that’s why Chopin is so close to me, because of the harmonic language, which colloquially grabs the heart. You have participated in many international piano competitions, including the International Brant Piano Competition in Birmingham, the Christopher Duke International Piano Recital Competition in London and the Ludwik Stefański Piano Competition in Płock. How do you remember these performances today and how do you approach these types of competitions, do they help young artists?
– I think the topic of competitions is quite complicated. It was only after years that I learned that you need to approach them with some distance and as a success it is best to treat the period of preparation and performance, instead of treating the lack of victory or reward as a failure. This is a lottery in which a whole lot of factors play a role and not everything depends on the participant. I think these are valuable experiences. Competitions certainly give a lot of motivation and opportunities to promote the skills of young artists. I remember my competition struggles well, although it was a stressful time. I was lucky that in addition to a few cash prizes, I also got an invitation to concerts in Japan after the competition in Płock, such a small tour. It was a great experience. I believe that it is worth to go to competitions that provide opportunities to earn contacts and non-regular prizes, including additional concerts. On such occasions, there can often be more good in the future than from a large sum of money.
