Are the songs on this new double album musical letters between the genius composer siblings Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn? Through their joint musical training, the children of a pianist and a respected Jewish banker were musically kindred spirits; music was their soul language. Later they exchanged many entertaining and poetic letters about their compositions. The sister, three years older, was the closest advisor to the “child prodigy” Felix throughout his life. According to those who knew her, she was his equal as a pianist and composer.

But while Felix made an international career, his “equally gifted sister”, according to Goethe, performed almost exclusively in the semi-public sphere of her well-known “Sunday music” in her parents’ palace in Berlin. On the side, she managed practical and social affairs for Felix and for her husband, the court painter Wilhelm Hensel, and raised their son. Her many compositions – mainly songs and smaller chamber music works (the genre “Songs without Words” goes back to her) – were only heard by a narrow circle of friends and family; or they ended up completely unheard “in the drawer”: Felix, in the tradition of his father, wanted to protect his sister from social hostility and was clearly against publishing her works. The lack of awareness was a lifelong problem for Fanny and also led to repeated tensions with her brother. At the age of 40, encouraged by her husband and friends, she finally decided to publish. A short time later she died of a stroke. Her brother, who was deeply affected by the sudden death of his beloved sister, composed only a few songs and followed her half a year later.

Throughout their lives, their music held the siblings together like an invisible bond. The “Duo Kasper Ablogin” also feels connected to the siblings through their music and understands this album as a “remembrance of them”.
