Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original analog master tapes to vinyl and PCM. The DSD was sourced from the PCM. George listened to all of the different A/D converters he had before he chose which to use, and he felt the George Massenburg GML 20 bit A/D produced the best and most synergistic sound for the project.

Illinois Jacquet’s 1956 album Swing’s The Thing features Roy Eldridge, Jimmy Jones, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown and Jo Jones. Throughout his career, Jacquet, who was born of a Sioux mother and a Creole father, played marvelous swing music. He was famed for his imaginative improvisations and gave brilliant shows with the Count Basie orchestra and at a number of Jazz At The Philharmonic concerts. The man from Louisiana performed swing at every live appearance – no wonder, then, that Norman Granz chose this theme as the title of the present recording, which was set down in October 1956. This time, however, Jimmy Jones on the piano was not responsible for providing the background for a vocal soloist; rather he delivers airy chords for the swinging tenor sax. That all musicians are superb interpreters of ballads is testified to in “Harlem Nocturne,” where Illinois Jacquet’s sound can best be described as “soulful.”

This is one of several in the complete collection of Illinois Jacquet’s recordings issued by Lonehill Jazz. The years covered by the label are from 1956-1966, in which the great saxophonist and bandleader did record somewhat infrequently but issued great performances each time out. And these two dates, one from 1956 (Swing’s the Thing) and one from 1958 (The Cool Rage), were issued on 10″ vinyl editions, This CD version also contains one bonus track, an alternate version of “Robin’s Nest,” inexplicably. There are 11 cuts in all, containing over 50 minutes of music. But the magic is in the performances, so to speak with Jacquet, Roy Eldridge, Jo Jones, Herb Ellis, Jimmy Jones and Ray Brown in the party. The latter session features a young Kenny Burrell, Wild Bill Davis on B-3, and Johnny Williams on drums. This is essential Jacquet. -AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek
