Helyne Stewart – Love Mood (1962/2021) [FLAC 24bit/96kHz]

Discovering this album was a serendipity because I was digging into the works of pianist Phineas Newborn, Jr. when I stumbled across it. Stewart’s voice – to me – is incredible. While there are no sound samples on this page at the time of this review you can listen to them on a double album set’s product page at Love Moods – Good Gravy . If you are new to Stewart’s vocals be prepared to be delighted.

The backing ensembles on this album are led by tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards and are comprised of some of the finest West Coast jazz musicians of the era. On the first four tracks, recorded for Contemporary on January 20, 1961, Stewart backed by the Teddy Edwards Septet comprised of Edwards on tenor saxophone, Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Art Pepper on alto saxophone, Pete Jolly on piano, Jimmy Bond on bass and Frank Butler on drums.

On the remaining tracks Stewart is backed by the Teddy Edwards Quartet comprised of Teddy Edwards on tenor saxophone, Phineas Newborn, Jr. on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Milt Turner on drums. These tracks were recorded on August 21 and 22, 1961.

This has quickly become one of my frequently played albums and has made me a staunch fan of Stewart.
