Nastya Mineral and Boris Lesnoy formed Calabi-Yau in Moscow at the end of 2020. A prominent artist on the local and international sub-underground scene – Nastya Mineral – is well-known for her contribution to the key Moscow free improv & punk acts such as Asian Woman On The Telephone (AWOTT), Punk Fraction Of The Red Brigades, Mikhail Mineral and more. Boris Lesnoy vice versa has emerged from the world of modern composition and tends toward the academic means of composing and directing. His main project, Phonema Choir, operates as a collective workshop whose participants are engaged in the development of phonetic formulas, spectral studies of phonemic landscapes, and work with particular acoustic spaces, and architecture of sound. As you’d expect from such an equivocal alliance, Calabi-Yau’s self-titled debut album sounds diverse and messy, blending a unique fusion of free improvisation, free jazz, automated drum rhythms, and concrete poetry. Nastya Mineral plays tenor saxophone, Boris Lesnoy holds clarinet, while wielding mesmerizing rhythms and gurgling synths alongside, – shortly, a minimal kit that you can put in a bag and take to a country house to improvise for a weekend long.
