An impresario in the broadest and most creative sense of the word, Quincy Jones’ career has encompassed the roles of composer, record producer, artist, film producer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, TV producer, record company executive, magazine founder, multi-media entrepreneur and humanitarian. As a master inventor of musical hybrids, he has shuffled pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz, classical, African and Brazilian music into many dazzling fusions, traversing virtually every medium, including records, live performance, movies and television.

As the title suggests, this 1962 classic from Quincy Jones finds the music legend arranging bossa nova material for an impressive big band that includes Clark Terry (trumpet, flugelhorn), Phil Woods (alto saxophone), Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone), Roland Kirk (flute, alto flute) and Jim Hall (guitar) among others. Featuring Quincy’s own Austin Powers reinvigorated “Soul Bossa Nova” and samba favorites like “Desafinado” and “One Note Samba.”

A byproduct of the bossa nova fad that followed the success of “Desafinado” (and preceded the famous recording Getz/Gilberto), this set finds Quincy Jones utilizing and exploiting bossa nova rhythms in his arrangements for a big band. The personnel includes flügelhornist Clark Terry, altoist Phil Woods, pianist Lalo Schifrin, guitarist Jim Hall, and (on “Soul Bossa Nova”) the remarkable Rahsaan Roland Kirk. However, since the selections are all quite brief, and some of the charts are a bit cheesy and inappropriate for the gentle rhythms, this disc (although pleasant enough) is of lesser interest. -Scott Yanow
