“It has been heart warming to see the return of vinyl. Even though I loved being free of its limitations in the digital world, there is still a warmth and presence to vinyl that somehow makes it a more natural human companion. It is great to see a new generation learning the secrets of the grooves” -Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel’s US album features as part of the second phase of vinyl re-issues that sees all three of his two-letter word titled albums: So, US and UP, get the same meticulous re-issue treatment as 2015’s PG1-4.
The album has been Half-Speed Remastered and cut to lacquers at 45RPM, across 3 x heavyweight LPs, to deliver maximum dynamic range in the sound. There is music on fives sides and an etching on the sixth. The vinyl was cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering, mastered by Tony Cousins at Metropolis and overseen by Peter’s main sound engineer Richard Chappell.

Gatefold sleeves utilise imagery from the original LP inner bags and all images are newly re-scanned. The album also contains a download card with a choice of digital download (Hi-Res 24bit/96k or 16bit/44.1k).
The album is a Limited Edition and individually Numbered. US is one of Peter’s most personal and confessional records as he explored and dissected many of the relationship problems he was facing at that time. But US is far from being bleakly introspective featuring several songs that have gone on to be amongst the most cherished in the Gabriel songbook.

Six years after earning his first blockbuster, Peter Gabriel finally delivered Us, his sequel to So. Clearly, that great span of time indicates that Gabriel was obsessive in crafting the album, and Us bears the sound of endless hours in the studio. It’s not just that the production is pristine, clean, and immaculate, it’s that the music is, with only a handful of exceptions (namely, the “Sledgehammer” rewrite “Steam” and the fellatio ode “Kiss That Frog”), remarkably subtle and shaded. It’s also not a coincidence that Us is, as Gabriel says in his liner notes, “about relationships,” since the exquisitely textured music lets him expose his soul, albeit in a typically obtuse way. Since the music is so muted, it’s no surprise that the album failed to capture a mass audience the way So did, but it’s foolish to expect anyone but serious fans to unravel an album this deliberate. Gabriel is as adventurous as ever, yet he is relentlessly sober about his experiments, burying exotic sounds and percussion underneath crawling tempos measured atmospherics — this is tastefully two-toned music, assembled by a consummate craftsman who became too immersed in detail to make anything but an insular, introspective work. Some gems are easier to unearth than others — “Digging in the Dirt” has an insistent pulse, “Blood of Eden” and “Come Talk to Me” are quite beautiful, “Secret World” is quietly anthemic — yet, given enough time, the record’s understated approach and reflection becomes its most attractive element. But it takes a lot of spins and patience to get to that point, since this is an album he made for himself, and only those dedicated to the artist will have the patience to decode it. -AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
