The old sideman’s aphorism to the effect that “good jazz pianists don’t in conservatories grow” has lost credence late under the assault a number of formally schooled progressivists. One of them was Neil Wolfe, an exceptionally talented pianist. Althought his credencials include composition and piano studies at the New England Conservatory, Wolfe is no recitalist. Somewhere between his boyhood piano lessons in Syracuse, NY, and the Baltimore bistro – where Columbia found him, Wolfe acquired the inexplicit but unmistikable sensibilities of Jazz. Given the genre’s fabled intangibles, fully developed and disciplined keyboard skills and a bench full of ideas, Wolfe’s statements are the kind of calibre of Art Tatum. He also evokes Tatum with, expectedly, his discernably classical keyboard learnings.
