Karen Lano has been said to have started the Pop-Folk revelation in France. With her captivating voice, she mixes pop, folk and jazz in her songs which she writes and composes herself. She has just finished her latest French tour promoting her new album, My Name is Hope Webster, which was released in October 2009. An intimate and sensual universe where pop, folk and jazz meet.

Numerous jazzmen claim to have been influenced by pop and folk music. One notably remembers the interest shown by Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius, and Wayne Shorter in Joni Mitchell during the 1970’s. This trend has endured to this day, as evidenced by Daniel Yvinec’s «soft spot» for singer Karen Lano. Invigorated by a quasi-telepathic understanding, the collaboration led to the production of a demo of pop covers and standards in 2006, from which one the songs was selected on Radio Nova’s «When Jazz Meets Pop» compilation. The keen interest aroused by this first step encouraged the young woman to pursue that path. While staying true to her early love for rock, she began to open up a little bit more to the very personal worlds of certain artists from the French scene (Camille, Jeanne Cherhal, Arthur H) as well as the Anglo-Saxon (Kate Bush, Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley). «What really moves me is this form of grace stemming from the balance between the melody, the lyrics and the music. I enjoy feeling a genuine pursuit and coherence between these three areas.» Naturally, jazz is also represented in her range of influences. But although she discovered its harmonic subtleties as early as her childhood – thanks to her father who played standards on the piano – she was mostly impressed by the amazing freedom of expression exhibited by jazzmen on stage. Yet, her own statement is characterized by other, more unusual art forms. Indeed, before she immersed herself into music, Karen Lano was first fascinated by cinema. Therefore, when she brings up German expressionism, the great musicals, or rock operas, one better understands from where the evocative charm of her music originates.
