A more fitting title for this album does not exist. It is yet another example of just how well Erroll Garner knew and understood himself and his music. Perhaps his greatest talent was an ability to distill and communicate precisely who he was at any given moment. Here we find him perfectly embodying the definition of his sun sign. Whatever your views on astrology might be, all that is left to do is listen.

The Octave Remastered Series is a historic year-long, 12-album project featuring newly restored and expanded editions of classic Erroll Garner releases from the 1960s and 1970s. Each album contains a newly discovered, unreleased bonus track. The newly minted bonus tracks in the series are all Garner originals, eight of the 12 being previously unreleased compositions. Utilizing the Plangent Process playback system for analog tape, these new transfers were remastered and, when needed, remixed by the Grammy winning Garner team.

Part of Mack Avenue’s wonderful Octave Remastered series, Gemini allows us to rediscover Erroll Garner in the last years of his life. Originally released in 1972, this groovy album was created along with double bassist Ernest McCarty Jr., conga player Jose Mangual and drummer Jimmie Smith. Supported by the omnipresent rhythm section, Garner plays not only piano but harpsichord too, revisiting standards such as How High the Moon, Tea for Two and These Foolish Things. The pianist also tackles more contemporary compositions, such as The Beatles’ Something. Like always, his unstoppable swing (one of the most recognizable in the history of jazz) radiates through this brilliant, multifaceted re-release. – Max Dembo
